With the project, lithium carbonate, which is used in lithium-ion batteries, which is the most critical component of electric vehicles, was produced from geothermal water. 55 tons of lithium carbonate will be produced annually from the production facility with a capacity of 0.6 tons/hour to be established in the region. Afyon Kocatepe University Dean of Engineering Faculty and the owner of the company Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yıldız told Anadolu Agency (AA) that with the project they prepared, they aimed to recover lithium from geothermal resources in the city and then produce lithium carbonate. Stating that lithium carbonate has become a very important raw material in recent years, Yıldız said, “This is due to the widespread use and importance of lithium ion battery technology, which is the most important area of use of lithium carbonate.” said. Emphasizing that with the signing of the climate agreement by the countries and the realization of the “Green Agreement” vision of the European Union, it is aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero, and said: It will bring especially electric vehicles to the fore. Lithium carbonate is one of the important raw materials in lithium-ion batteries, which is the most critical component of electric vehicles. It is expected that developments in the world will increase the demand for lithium carbonate in the future. Therefore, projects have intensified to research raw materials containing lithium in the earth’s crust and to bring them into the country’s economy. ” Explaining that Afyonkarahisar also has a very important geothermal potential, Yıldız stated that they knew from their previous studies that lithium was also present in geothermal resources, and that they were investigating the lithium potential of Ömer-Gecek Field in the project. Stating that they managed to selectively recover the lithium in geothermal water with the mechanism they prepared and then convert it to lithium carbonate under appropriate conditions, Yıldız said that they used advanced technology devices and equipment in the project. Feasibility Study Project will be prepared Yıldız said, “We have succeeded in producing lithium carbonate at low cost, with high efficiency and with high purity. We have produced material with a purity level of over 97 percent in the studies. The project we carried out under the consultancy of Associate Professor Muhammed Fatih Can has shown that lithium in geothermal resources in terms of both the applied method and the outputs obtained. We can say that it is the first study in Turkey in terms of the conversion of lithium carbonate to lithium carbonate.” he said. Yıldız stated that they started initiatives for the preparation and implementation of the Confirmatory Feasibility Study Project for the establishment of a large-scale facility in the study area.
